Steel mesh, Cable Ties

Coming from five generations of New Zealand farmers, Carolyn feels at home close to the land and she also feels close to the creative process through her mother, Elsa Lye, who used the kitchen table to weave and make shibori (famous style of fabric dying particular to Japan). Living at Keratu, near Kawakawa in Northland, Carolyn is surrounded by the rural landscape, and she enjoys collecting what she has found randomly and has an intuitive primal response to her materials. While Carolyn has knowledge and respect for the tangata whenua of her district, Ngati Manu, she sees herself as part of a greater whole and quotes from Witi Ihimaera’s novel Rope of Man – ‘we only think we are separate’.
