'Omapere - Rawene' - Nigel Brown
Acrylic and mixed media on cupboard door
For more than forty years, Nigel Brown's paintings and prints have emphasised his vision of a New Zealand identity.
He is profoundly aware of the relationship between human beings and their environment. In his hands symbolism is a powerful and evocative instrument.
This work was painted in Dunedin on an old cupboard door following his time in Northland late 2022. There are fragments of photocopying related to the history of Rawene and the Bryers of Omapere, part of his wife Susan's whakapapa.
Six other watercolour and pen works on paper under glass were created in transit while travelling in Northland.
