A cutting on SH 3 North Taranaki at Mohakatino. North Island - brown kiwi - robin/toutouwai – ruru - paua slug are found in this isolated conservation area. Also home to several giant kahikatea. The rugged country of the 3149 ha Mohakatino Conservation Area drains into the Purupuru Stream. Wedged between the Mokau River and Waitaanga conservation areas, the Mohakatino has limited access with no tracks or facilities. The area receives no goat control by DOC hunters so goat numbers are good with the odd pig.

The landscape ranges from flat manuka dominant pakihi/wetland area in the south to steep limestone ridges featuring black beech and podocarp/hardwood in the west. The Waipapa River area is home to several giant kahikatea.
