Exploring the Hokianga Through Water Colour

Susan has spent the last 2 months exploring the Hokianga landscape during her artist residency at The Church Rawene. She is related to Reverend William White (1794 – 1875), superintendent of the Wesleyan Mission Station at Mangungu in 1830.
“I had read the diaries and correspondence of Reverend William White and his wife Eliza, and spent time imagining what the Hokianga would have looked like in the 1830s. As they relied on the waterways of the Hokianga, most of my paintings are of landscapes reflected and surrounded by the tidal waters. I have attempted to capture light as it plays with the contours of the land and was inspired by the ever-changing landscape.
