" The First Footprint" is an accumulative exploration and visual interpretation of Polynesian mariners and the skills they passed through generations which ultimately lead them to Aotearoa.
Butler is an experienced navigator and passionate about marine wildlife, sailing and maritime history. He has sailed thousands of miles across the Pacific Ocean including Rekohu (Chatham Island) as well as making regular voyages on commercial ships from Aotearoa New Zealand to Asia, the US and Europe. This body of work is an acknowledgement of the skills of those wonderful ancient Polynesian and Pacifica mariners.
There are 20 images in total, each work is digitally created and there is an Edition of 10 for each image available.

This is Butler's first solo exhibition. Butler states:
"I have been inspired by the reality of a difficult voyage made hundreds of years ago, by highly skilled people without many resources, including metal so everything was made from materials at hand, what grew, rocks, shells, bone etc. " - G.Butler, 2021.
Below: Migration map of the Kuaka: Aotearoa: Te Ao (the world), o te (of the path or pathway), roa (long), i.e. the World of the Long Pathway. The land where the 11,000 km nonstop voyage and flightpath of the Kuaka terminates.
