JOANNE BARRETT – Ngāi Tahu, Kāti Māmoe, Waitaha Joanne Barrett is of Maori, Danish, and Scottish descent. As an ATI Graphic Arts graduate, she worked for 25 years as a freelance graphic artist, followed by eight years in the design industry managing corporate design, and brand development projects. As an artist her paintings are influenced by the might and spirituality of Te Waipounamu landscapes and by the landscapes of the beautiful Hokianga where she lives. To create these conceptual landforms, Joanne applies layers of multiple interactions allowing for textures to be formed and carved into the surface. These carved lines denote generations of growth (whenua) or lineage (tangata whenua). Further layers of painted constructions reflect the essence of the land, while earthy tones create a deeper relationship both above and beneath the surface to give a sense of connection with te wairua o Papatūānuku.
